SANTA TECLA |

 Heading west from San Salvador, the Carretera Interamericana runs
14km through light industrial and residential districts to the small,
busy town of SANTA TECLA , briefly the capital in 1854 and also known as
Nueva San Salvador. Although considerably more relaxed than the capital,
there is little reason to linger here. Six kilometres beyond, just off
the highway is the turicentro of Los Chorros (daily 7am-5pm; US$0.90),
beautifully situated in a natural gorge. Small waterfalls cascade
through mossy volcanic slopes into a series of landscaped pools,
suitable for bathing; there are public changing rooms and showers and a
couple of comedores provide meals. Come on a weekday, unless you prefer
your scenery with crowds. If you're in a group and feel brave enough to
ignore the warnings about robbers, the surrounding hills provide
pleasant walks. Buses for Los Chorros (#79) leave from 11a Av Sur and C
Darío (every 15min; 40min); alternatively, take any Santa Ana bus from
the Terminal de Occidente and ask to be dropped at the gate. |
